Lord-Lieutenant presents King’s Awards for Voluntary Service 2024

Mr Andrew Try, Lord-Lieutenant of Berkshire, presented the King’s Awards for Voluntary Service to six exceptional community groups, recognising their outstanding impact and dedication, at Shaw House in Newbury.

The King’s Award for Voluntary Service is the highest national honour for volunteer groups, equivalent to an MBE, and sets the standard for excellence in volunteering. This year’s winners were announced on The King’s birthday in November 2024, acknowledging the highest standards of community service and volunteer commitment.

The following Berkshire groups were recognised for their exceptional contributions:

Cianna’s Smile

Since 2012, Cianna’s Smile has been raising awareness about Sickle Cell Anaemia and supporting individuals and families affected by this condition. Their work reduces isolation through family days out and respite breaks, bridging the gap between sufferers and medical professionals who may not fully understand the complexities of the condition.

Freely Fruity

A truly unique initiative, Freely Fruity enhances the local community through the planting of fruit trees, contributing to environmental sustainability, local food security, and community well-being. Their work supports carbon capture, creates natural habitats, and supplies local food banks while encouraging physical activity and mental well-being through community volunteering.

Loose Ends Newbury

For 34 years, Loose Ends Newbury has been a beacon of hope for homeless and vulnerable people. Operating at least five meal sessions every week throughout the year, they provide hot meals, food packages, and support to those in need, creating a vital community resource in Newbury.

Newbury Riding for the Disabled Ltd

For two decades, Newbury Riding for the Disabled has been enriching the lives of disabled children by offering them the joy and freedom of horse riding. The programme fosters physical activity, emotional well-being, and social inclusion, providing unforgettable experiences in the great outdoors.

Soulscape

With an innovative approach to youth well-being, Soulscape supports young people as they navigate the challenges of modern life. Through workshops on relationships, self-esteem, mental health, and more, they provide essential support during the transition from primary to secondary school and throughout secondary education.

The Baby Bank

Founded in 2015, The Baby Bank offers crucial support to families in need, helping children aged 0 to 16 and their parents facing poverty, domestic violence, or other hardships. In 2023 alone, they assisted 7,500 beneficiaries, reflecting a 60% increase in demand due to the rising cost of living.

Each group received a commemorative crystal and a certificate signed by The King, symbolising their extraordinary contributions to the local community. This year’s ceremony brings the total to 95 Berkshire groups who have received the award since it was established by Queen Elizabeth II in 2002 to commemorate her Golden Jubilee.

The event was attended by volunteers, supporters, and civic dignitaries from across Berkshire, showcasing the community’s admiration and gratitude for the invaluable work of these volunteer groups

The Lord-Lieutenant was supported by Leading Cadet Alisdair Shankland from Newbury Sea Cadets and Cadet Warrant Officer Sam Bromham from 459 (Windsor) Squadron.

The King’s Awards for Voluntary Service celebrate the spirit of volunteering, shining a spotlight on community champions whose selfless dedication continues to inspire and uplift those around them. Congratulations to all the winners for their extraordinary achievements and for setting an inspiring example for communities across Berkshire and beyond.
