The Lord-Lieutenant of the Royal County of Berkshire, Mr Andrew Try, hosted a very special Garden Party at The Great House, Coppa Club in Sonning – an event dedicated to celebrating the unsung heroes of the Royal County. These are the individuals who, often without recognition, quietly dedicate themselves to strengthening their local communities and improving the lives of those around them.
This inaugural gathering – envisioned as the first of many – shone a spotlight on those whose contributions too often go unnoticed, but whose impact is deeply felt. Among the highlights of the afternoon was the presentation of six British Empire Medals, awarded in His Majesty The King’s 2025 New Year Honours. Mr Try had the privilege of presenting the medals on behalf of The King.
Those honoured were:
- Mrs Aisha Abdus-Samad BEM, for services to children and young people with special educational needs
- Mr Kamran Abdus-Samad BEM, for services to children and young people with special educational needs
- Mr Michael Clews BEM, for services to young people through the promotion of aviation
- Mrs Sarah Jane France BEM, for services to the community of Maidenhead
- Mrs Barbara Laing BEM, for services to schools and local communities in Kongwa, Tanzania
- Mrs Corrinne Rowe BEM, for voluntary service to the Red Cross
The event brought together and celebrated those quiet champions whose selfless contributions so often go unseen, yet form the backbone of community life across Berkshire.
Despite the rain, it was a joyful and uplifting afternoon – a fitting tribute to the remarkable individuals who continue to make a difference, not for recognition, but out of care, compassion, and commitment to others.
